Writing Assignment

Write a one page essay (double spaced, 12 point type, one inch margins) addressing the following issue:

In the Star Trek episode we viewed today, "Who Mourns for Adonais?" (no, I can't explain this funky spelling), Apollo had his ideas about how mortals and gods were supposed to interact, but the crewmen of the Starship Enterprise had a different opinion (well except for Carolyn Palamas, until she was reminded of some truths). Explain why these two views (Apollo's and Kirk's) came into conflict. What was the nature of the conflict and how was it presented? (Hint: think about the distribution of power and how it was manifested). Use any of the mortal/divine interactions that were presented (including his relationship with Lt. Palamas). Try to include details of the episode and point out where they agreed with your readings and where they didn't. Start your essay by presenting your understanding of the message in the show and comment on the relative success or failure of this message. Refer to your text as often as necessary.

No handwritten papers, please. Bring them to class on Thursday. Have some fun with this, but please do be as detailed as possible. ONE PAGE.
