Pre-Writing Exercise due Tuesday Nov 7 IMPORTANT: BRING THREE COPIES OF YOUR PAPER WITH YOU TO C LASS ON TUESDAY FOR PEER REVIEW SESSION!!!!!!! You will do the following exercise and bring in a typed write-up on Tuesday. This assignment concerns our readings about violence in our schools and society. You are NOT writing an essay for Tuesday - this is another pre-writing exercise. Interview an individual who has strong opinions about this subject. It could be your priest, a parent, a friend, someone who has been the victim of school or societal GUN violence (in particular). Write up a series of questions to ask them. These could include questions about this person's opinions on the cause of the violence (tv, video games, availability of guns, lack of parental supervision, something in the water...), expectations and/or fears for their own future and the future of our society, methods to contain the violence (metal detectors in schools, for example, or anti-gun legislation)...or any other pertinent questions. YOU put together a concrete list of questions to ask so you can get a complete overview of your interview subject's opinions on these matters. Of course, it is important to ask why the interview subject has these thoughts. Do not choose your roommate as your interview subject if s/he has not strong feelings or reasons to think about such matters. That would be a waste of everyone's time. After you come up with your list, interview your chosen candidate. If possible, tape record the conversation. Transcribe the conversation as carefully as you can, getting down every word. TAKE NOTES DURING THE INTERVIEW if you can't tape it. Then, for Tuesday, just bring in a typed copy of your conversation. It should look like this: YOU: QUESTION MR. SMITH: ANSWER YOU: QUESTION MR. SMITH: ANSWER Eventually, you will use this information to write an essay on this topic. The interview should last at least 15 minutes. You don't have to read any more of Tonto right now.
