Essay #3 for English 40
Dr. Siegel

IMPORTANT: BRING THREE COPIES OF YOUR PAPER WITH YOU TO C LASS ON TUESDAY FOR PEER REVIEW SESSION!!!!!!!

The last essay you wrote concerned whether you agreed or disagree with "the Word Police". You considered the issues on both sides, and determined that yes, sexist and racist language should be filtered out of our language, or no, our language should not be altered because some people are more sensitive than others. Obviously, there is a lot more to it, but you get the gist of it. You considered the ways in which this could be done, the effect it would have on our use of language and the thought that produces it, and the ways our society might be affected.

If you came to see me as you were asked to yesterday (Friday), you got back your essay, with lots of comments and suggestions for improvement (and a little bit of encouragement thrown into the mix). You also received the next assignment, DUE TUESDAY OCTOBER 10.

Here it is for those of you who didn't bother to come and see me:

Write a 2-3 page paper (typed!) arguing the other side of the issue. This might be difficult for some of you because you don't feel that you can write about something you don't believe, but consider it an intellectual exercise. Line up your arguments and go for it. My suggestion is that you go back to the same essays we read to prepare for the first essay (see syllabus for a list) and go through them looking for good quotations or facts or opinions of authors that you can use to SUPPORT your arguments. In other words, DON'T give me a run-down of what everyone else has to say on the subject: DO use their ideas to bolster your own presentation.

So the first thing you really have to do is sit down and think about arguments for this side of the issue. But please DO go back to these essays and incorporate their ideas and especially their good observations into your essay. And be careful when you use quotations from other sources: if you use other people's words, you must put quotation marks around them or I will think they are *your* words.
