Growing up, I spent the summers in my mother's hometown, Kronach, Germany.

The left picture shows a house on Lucas Cranach Street, where the famous Renaissance painter was born.

Kronach's coat-of-arms, right, was bestowed by Prince-Bishop Melchior Otto in 1651.

The whole town is very picturesque, especially the Upper Town.       The "downtrodden men" holding the shield commemorate a horrific episode in the Thirty Years' War.
