This is a photograph of my youngest son, Noah. It was taken when he was only 2 years old, but it is still one of my favorites.
Personal:
I am married to Beth Poore-Bowman, and our home is a half mile from the campus of Hampden-Sydney College, where I have been the Director of Counseling Services since 1994.
Beth is a Nurse Practitioner who provides services at
Cardiovascular Associates of Central Virginia. She has also provided
health services at Longwood University, Southside
Pediatrics, and as part of a 2003 medical mission trip to Honduras.

Beth and I have had five children ... and two of them are still at home. In 2006-2007, we struggled with the challenges of our oldest son’s battle with cancer. On December 2, 2007, Blake died in his apartment at our home in the loving company of his family and devoted girlfriend, Meghan Williamson. Throughout his illness, he was an inspiration to all of us who shared his struggle with him. Our family has been incredibly proud of Blake, particularly of the remarkable kindness and generosity he demonstrated as he allowed us to care for and help him during his illness in whatever way we could.
Our four other children:
Mitchell
(26) is a 2004 graduate of Emory and Henry College
in Emory, Virginia. He lives and works at Triple Creek Ranch, his
grandparents' cattle ranch in Virgilina, Virginia.
Hannah
(18) is a freshman at
Colby College, in Waterville, Maine.
Abigail
(16) is a sophomore at Prince Edward County
High School.
Noah
(14) is a freshman at Prince Edward County
High School.
I have attended Elizabethtown College (B.A., 1977), the University of Ghana (junior year abroad, 1975-76), the University of Oregon (M.S., 1980), and the State University of New York at Albany (Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology, 1993), with a predoctoral internship at Penn State University. I have been licensed as a Clinical Psychologist in Virginia since 1995.
Pictures:
Some 1998 vacation pictures will be back on-line before long ....
Beth and I traveled with our 3 younger children for a month during the summer of 1998, visiting Yellowstone, the Pacific Northwest, and the Canadian Rockies. Thanks to my brother-in-law, Al Hartmann, I have a couple pictures in digital format from the time we shared camping in Yellowstone that summer.
I enjoyed salmon fishing in Alaska with the men of the Poore family during the last week of August 1998.
July 2000 vacation pictures ....
Our summer trip in 2000 started with travel north through northern Michigan into Ontario.
We then traveled the Trans-Canadian highway across Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta to Glacier National Park, where we spent a week. The scenery there was beautiful and we enjoyed some time on the Blackfoot Indian Reservation nearby.
After visiting friends in southern Montana for a couple of days, we spent almost a week in Yellowstone National Park before returning east.
July 2001 - Whales along the western coast of Newfoundland ....
These pictures are from our July 2001 vacation trip to Newfoundland and Labrador. One sunny afternoon, as we drove north along the western coast of Newfoundland, we looked toward Labrador and saw humpback whales.
Summer 2006 trip to Europe ....
These pictures are from our summer 2006 trip to Europe. We enjoyed traveling for almost 3 weeks in Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, and France.
