French 201: Intermediate French

Course Procedure:
The student will prepare for the next day's lesson by completing the indicated sections in the Manuel de Preparation
or on the internet site. Work will be accomplished before class on day indicated. In class discussion will center on activities presented in the Manuel de Classe, including CD-ROM exercises, internet activities, or video tapes. Both texts need to be brought to class. Additional class time Tuesday evening at 6:15.

Class Regulations:
1. Class attendance and participation is required. Sleeping doesn't count as attendance. Three absences provokes a Dean's warning; a fourth withdrawal.
2. No late papers accepted. Papers accepted will be typed and double-spaced. They will be returned graded in one week.
3. No test can be made up. Any test missed due to illness, car trouble, or court dates will be dropped as the lowest grade.
4. Please discuss any complications with the professor.

Learning objectives:
· Verbs: Review present, past, and future tenses. Learn pluperfect, future perfect, conditional, past conditional tenses
· More advanced grammar such as relative pronouns, demonstrative adjectives and pronouns, etc.
· Continued vocabulary acquisition
· Reading of short, glossed texts
· Writing of short passages of several paragraphs, writing in complex sentences
· Asking and answering questions orally, sustaining simple conversation, understanding simple native speaker dialogue, interviews, announcements, etc.

Goals  (based on ACTFL intermediate-level)
· To understand the gist of native speaker dialogues or announcements given the context
· To communicate orally about the speaker's self and situation, to give directions, to explain simple instructions, to give opinions, to ask and answer questions and to begin to speak conditionally and hypothetically, though with errors
· To read glossed prose passages of several paragraphs to several pages in length, especially within the context of familiar topics or routine business.
· To write simple letters, brief summaries, narration's of past events and future plans, descriptions of people, places or events.
· To become familiar with French and Francophone culture, history, and customs.

Methods:
·     The intermediate grammar text Quant à moi which uses the Functional approach.
·     Technological aides such as the Internet, computers, video, CD-roms, movies, e-mail
       with native French speakers.
