As you read, please think about these questions.
  • Who is the narrator of this story?  What can we tell about him from the way the book is written?  What is his point of view?  What does he think we know already?  With whom does he want use to sympathize?
  • Have you ever read one of the Gospels all the way through before?  If you never have, how do you know this story?  What parts are the most familiar to you?  What parts are a surprise?
  • With what part of Jesus’ life does this Gospel begin?
  • With what episode does it end?  (Answer these two questions very precisely.)
  • Who participates in the first and last episodes?
  • In what kinds of places do most of the actions in this Gospel take place?
  • What kinds of things does Jesus do?
  • What different types of people does Jesus interact with?
  • Does he speak to the disciples differently than the crowd?  If so, how?
  • Who are Jesus’ accusers?  Do they all come from the same class or group?
  • What authority does Pilate represent?
  • Is the language of this Gospel difficult or easy to understand?  How does it compare to other books we've read this semester?
