Introduction

Grading

There will be 14 weekly laboratories, 5 computer projects, two tests, and a final exam. In the final average, these will be weighted as follows.

Category Weight
Laboratories 30%
Projects 35%
Test average 20%
Final exam 15%

Laboratories (30%)

Each week we will conduct a computer lab during the Thursday I period in B 120. The labs will be distributed in class on the Wednesday before the lab. Each lab has a reading assignment. You should do the reading before coming to the lab.

Each lab contains a series of exercises for you to do on the computer. At the end of each lab, there is an Application part. You will write a short computer program modeled after the examples seen in the lab. Normally, you should be able to finish most of the lab during the lab session, leaving the Application part as homework. This work will be due by midnight on the Monday following the lab. No late work will be accepted. The first lab will be on Thursday, Sep 4.

The lab schedule is as follows:

Lab Date Due date
1 Thu, Sep 4 Mon, Sep 8
2 Thu, Sep 11 Mon, Sep 15
3 Thu, Sep 18 Mon, Sep 22
4 Thu, Sep 25 Mon, Sep 29
5 Thu, Oct 2 Mon, Oct 6
6 Thu, Oct 9 Mon, Oct 15
7 Thu, Oct 16 Fri, Oct 20
8 Thu, Oct 23 Mon, Oct 27
9 Thu, Oct 30 Mon, Nov 3
10 Thu, Nov 6 Mon, Nov 10
11 Thu, Nov 13 Mon, Nov 17
12 Thu, Nov 20 Mon, Nov 24
13 Thu, Dec 4 Mon, Dec 8

Computer projects (35%)

When you turn in a project, it will be tested using various sets of test data. Then I will read your program carefully to see exactly how you solved the problem. I will assign a grade to your project based on the following areas.

These four areas will be weighted as follows.

Area Weight
Execution 25%
Style 15%
Design 30%
Implementation 30%

The computer projects are pledged. You may get help from me and the lab assistants on duty, but you are not permitted to get help from anyone else.

The projects are due by midnight of the due date. The project schedule is as follows:

Project Assigned Due date
1 Wed, Sep 17 Wed, Sep 24
2 Wed, Oct 1 Wed, Oct 8
3 Wed, Oct 22 Wed, Oct 29
4 Wed, Nov 5 Wed, Nov 12
5 Wed, Nov 19 Mon, Dec 1
6 Mon, Dec 1 Mon, Dec 8

Tests and Final Exam (20%, 15%)

The test schedule is as follows:

Test Date
1 Fri, Oct 10
2 Fri, Nov 14

The tests will be taken at your desks using pencil and paper (no computers).

The final exam will be given in this room at the time stated in the exam schedule. Everyone must take the final exam; it will not be rescheduled. The final exam will be in two parts. Part A will be done at your desk using pencil and paper; Part B will be done on the computer. You will have an hour and a half for each part.

You should make every conceivable effort to be present and prepared for an hour test. If you do not feel that you are prepared, you must take the test anyway. The only valid excuses for missing a test are serious illnesses and unavoidable emergencies, which can be verified. If you foresee that you must miss a test, then you should make arrangements, before the absence, to take the test. If you miss a test for a reason that is less than compelling, you will not be allowed to take the test later. If you miss a test, it is essential that you contact me and make arrangements at the earliest possible moment. Failure to follow this policy will invalidate any excuse.

Attendance

Read the Class Attendance section of the Academic Catalogue 2001-2002. Attendance will be checked at the beginning of each class. If you arrive late, you will be counted absent. If that happens and you would like to be marked present, see me after class. Otherwise, late arrivals and absences will all count as absences. When assigning final grades, attendance will be taken into account.

Absences Action
0 - 2 Grade bonus (one "part" of a grade)
3 - 5 Neutral
6 - 8 Grade penalty (one "part" of a grade)
> 8 Withdrawal (WF)

A warning letter will be sent out after the 8th absence.
