Along the Appalachian Trail over Apple Orchard Mountain

At the top of the Cornelius Creek Trail, we join the Appalachian Trail. The forest is more colorful up here since we are now above 3000 feet elevation. Along the A.T. we pass a number of thru-hikers on their way to Georgia.
Oh, boy! Let's have some honey! Um, wait, I think that a hornet's nest. What do you say we just move along?

At 4225 feet, Apple Orchard Mountain is the highest mountain in central Virginia. From here we look down on the Peaks of Otter, Sharp Top and Flat Top.
The sun is getting low as we look west out over the Arnold Valley. The Allegheny Mountains are in the distance.
Paul walks across the open summit of Apple Orchard Mountain as we begin the return trip to the car.
We join Parker's Gap Road as we approach Sunset Field and the parking lot. The end of a beautiful day!
