June 15, 2002 - On a clear, warm day, a large group of College Church adults, youth and children met in Scottsville, where
Dorothy Porterfield had arranged for a canoe excursion down the James River. The group was then bussed several miles upstream and
outfitted with life preservers, oars and canoes. Singles and duos took turns launching the canoes; the group dispersed into smaller clusters
as each canoe took its own pace.
Many types of fish, birds and insects were seen along the beautiful route. The drought had led to a record low water level,
increasing the number and complexity of rocky rapids. This led to some tricky navigation, and one particularly spectacular capsizing
was reported!
After the two- to three-hour trip, members gathered on shore to trade stories and share refreshments. The general consensus
was that this would be a good activity to do again!
