| Commonwealth Chorale at Farmville Presbyterian
|
The Commonwealth Chorale began, in essence, in the 1970's when the choirs of the the Farmville and Hampden-Sydney
College Presbyterian churches, with a small Lynchburg orchestra, presented a highly successful Messiah. After a 30-year
hiatus, Norma Williams, the director, revived and invigorated it, with an official name and non-profit corporate status. It made its
debut in 1996 in a performance of Messiah with members of the Richmond Symphony Orchestra.
With up to 110 adult and 20 youth singers, five pianists, and two music directors, drawn from fourteen counties of Southside Virginia,
the Commonwealth Chorale boasts an enthusiastice membership corps, a dynamic board of directors, and an international advisory
board. Our growing repertoire includes the great choral music from Bach through Poulenc.
For several years was been a December tradition to perform, in addition to our major concert presentation, six full productions of Amahl and
the Night Visitors in our area elementary schools.
The Commonwealth Chorale has become "the cultural jewel of Southside Virginia."
