ONE GREAT HOUR OF SHARING

What Is One Great Hour of Sharing?
To see how your "One Great Hour of Sharing" dollars are used to help in Lebanon
during the ongoing crisis, go to the Presbyterian News site.
This program has its roots in the post-World War II era, when Protestant Churches united to provide relief and reconstruction to areas
around the world that had been devastated by the war. Since that time the effort has been ecumenical, with denominations changing
and merging. Currently the One Great Hour of Sharing committee officially comprises nine Christian denominations:
American Baptist Churches USA, African Methodist Episcopal
Zion Church, Church of the Brethren, Christian Church (Disciples of Christ),
Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Presbyterian Church (USA.), Reformed Church in
America, United Church of Christ, and the United Methodist Church.
While each denomination allocates its gifts differently, all use their funds for ministries of disaster relief, refugee assistance, and
development aid. There are projects in more than one hundred countries, including the United States and Canada.
Within the Presbyterian Church (USA), programs supported by One Great Hour of Sharing have evolved along with our
understanding of how best to stand with people in their suffering and offer an authentic witness to God’s healing love. At the present
time, contributions are split in approximate thirds among the Presbyterian Hunger Program, the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance,
and the Self-Development of People. About 4% is used to address homelessness and affordable housing. Our gifts are a powerful,
tangible witness to the healing love of Christ for all people.
This offering is traditionally collected on Easter Sunday in the morning service.
