LATIN 111
Midterm Review (Fall 2002)

What you will be expected to be able to do on the Latin 111 midterm exam:

All vocabulary from chapters 1-6.
All grammar presented in chapters 1-6.

See the index in Wheelock for a run-down on what will be covered. Practice by doing the exercises in the back of the book. I will seek inspiration there as I write the test.

NOUN CHART: FILL IN THE BLANKS

gender nom sing gen sing acc sing definition derivative
    amici
answer:
gender nom sing gen sing acc sing definition derivative

conjugation present imperfect future definition derivative
1 laudat laudabat laudabit praise laud

Be able to decline noun/adjective pairs in singular and plural:

a small kiss (basium parvum)

the pretty teacher (magistra pulchra)

a great poet (poeta magnus)

Know a derivative – if available – for each vocabulary word

VERBS: Be able to translate conjugated verb forms both ways:

examples:

  1. poteris = you will be able
  2. I was praising = laudabam

Be able to translate sentences and answer detailed questions about each word/construction:

ex: Mali libros bonos tolerare non possunt.

answer: The evil men are not able to tolerate good, free men.

Possible questions:

1. Explain how you know that “mali” is a substantive. That means you have to know what a substantive is, how it is translated, and why it looks the way it does.

2. What kind of infinitive does “possunt” take in this sentence? Answer: “complementary infinitive”

There will also be a section asking you questions about Latin language concepts we have covered. I will also take one of the stories we read in class and ask questions about it. I will only ask questions about concepts/vocabulary covered through chapter 6.
