The Virginia Tech math competition is Saturday, October 26, from 9am to 11:30am. It will be held here on campus, in Bagby 111. I'm offering two points of extra credit (on the course final grade!) for any Math 441 student who participates. Here is a link to last year's exam so you can see what you are getting into.
The Putnam Exam is on Saturday, December 7, from 10am to 6pm. It will also be in Bagby 111. I'm offering two points of extra credit (three if you can stick through to the end!). Here is a link to last year's Putnam exam.
Both the Virginia Tech math exam and the Putnam exam are very difficult. There is no shame in not scoring any points when you take these test. The fun is in the challenge. The tests cover calculus 1, 2, multivariable calculus, linear algebra, modular arithmetic, some group theory, and some real analysis (especially sequences and series), and discrete math.
The extra credit for taking these exams does not depend on how you do. If you cannot take the exams, but still want a chance to get some extra credit, we might be able to work out an alternative. Ask me in person.
