TI-83 Instructions
Boxplots and Five-Number Summaries
- Boxplots
- Enter the Data
- Enter the data into list
L1.
- Find the max and min
- Press
STAT. Several menu
titles appear. EDIT is highlighted.
- Use the arrow key to select the
CALC menu title. The
CALC menu appears.
- Item #1,
1-Var Stats, is already highlighted.
- Press
ENTER. The phrase 1-Var Stats appears in the window.
- Press
2nd L1.
- Press
ENTER. A list of statistics appears for the data in list
L1.
- Use the arrow key to scroll down to the min and the max, labeled
minX
and maxX. Record them.
- Set up the Stat Plot
- Press
2nd STAT PLOT (in the upper left corner). The
STAT PLOTS menu appears.
- Use the arrow key to select one of the plots, say
Plot1.
- Press
ENTER.
- Use the left/right arrow keys to select
On.
- Press
ENTER. This turns Plot1 on. (The other
plots should be turned off.)
- Press the down arrow once. This allows you to select the type of plot.
- Use the left/right arrows to select the boxplot type, the fifth one.
(The icon looks like a little boxplot with the median line through the box.)
- Press
ENTER.
- Press the down arrow once. This allows you to select the list containing the data.
- Press
2nd L1.
- Set up the Window
- Press
WINDOW (on the top row of buttons).
- Next to
Xmin, enter a value that is as least as small as the minimum.
- Press the down arrow once.
- Next to
Xmax, enter a value that is as least as large as the maximum
- Draw the Boxplot
- Press
GRAPH (in the upper right corner). The boxplot appears.
- Five-Number Summaries
- Method 1 (without a boxplot)
- Enter the data into list
L1.
- Press
STAT. Several menu titles appear. EDIT
is highlighted.
- Use the arrow key to select the
CALC menu title. The
CALC menu appears.
- Select item #1,
1-Var Stats.
- Press
ENTER. The phrase 1-Var Stats appears
in the window.
- Press
2nd L1.
- Press
ENTER. A list of statistics appears for the data in
list L1.
- Scroll down the list, using the arrow key. The last five statistics are
the five-number summary (
minX, Q1,
Med, Q3, maxX).
- Method 2 (with a boxplot)
- Follow the instructions above to create a boxplot
of the data.
- Press
TRACE (on the top row of buttons). A blinking X appears
at the median line in the boxplot. The value of the median is displayed
at the bottom of the window.
- Press the right arrow key once and then again to see the third quartile
Q3 and the max.
- Press the left arrow key to see the first quartile Q1 and the min.
