This week we will start talking about likelihood functions and maximum likelihood estimation. This material will use less linear algebra and more of the probability theory from last semester. We'll be using the probability distributions sheet a lot.

Monday, March 23

Goal. To introduce likelihood functions.

I'll try to post solutions to the questions on the workshop soon. In the mean time, here are solutions to the problems from Midterm 2:

Also, I still haven't gotten homework 4 solutions from everyone. You can turn in homework solutions at any time, but I would recommend not waiting too long!

Wednesday, March 25

Goal. To introduce maximum likelihood estimation based on a sample.

Friday, March 27

Goal. To find the maximum likelihood estimate for more than one parameter at a time.

Next week we will take a look at logistic regression which is a really important application of maximum likelihood estimation. We will also look at some of the problems with maximum likelihood estimates.
